REVIEW: Jahmene Douglas – Love Never Fails

Jahmene Douglas wowed viewers on the last series of X Factor right from his first audition, where he performed a jaw-dropping rendition of Etta James’ ‘At Last’. He continued to win over the audience throughout the competition with his outstanding vocals and sweet manners but fell at the last hurdle when he came second to the series winner, James Arthur. However, Jahmene has picked himself back up and is now prepping the release of his debut album ‘Love Never Fails’. ‘Love Never Fails’ is a collection of covers, or as Jahmene prefers ‘gospel interpretations’, with the lead single being Jahmene’s…

REVIEW: Pacific Rim

Guillermo Del Toro has presented audiences with his new science-fiction thriller Pacific Rim. The director of hits such as Hell Boy and Pan’s Labyrinth has made what he calls a “lighter adventure story” that he hopes will be a change from the usual dark summer blockbusters of the last few years, such as Batman. The film is set in the 2020s: Earth is under attack by Kaiju, colossal monsters which have emerged from a portal on the ocean floor. To fight these monsters, humanity unites to create the Jaegers: gigantic robots controlled by two human pilots whose minds are joined through a “neural…

REVIEW: Peace – In Love

In Love is the debut album from one of the UK’s fastest-rising bands: Peace. The Birmingham quartet , who formed just two years ago, have put together an impressive piece of work that’s the perfect accompaniment to spring/summer ‘13 (even if the weather outside isn’t). Their sound is reminiscent of The Maccabees and Vampire Weekend so if you’re a fan of either of those bands – you’ll love In Love. Higher Than The Sun kicks off the album and sets the perfect tone for the rest of the record. It’s a real feel-good track that is indie-pop at its best.…

REVIEW: Side Effects

Steven Soderbergh, Academy-Award winning director of classics such as Erin Brokovich and Ocean’s Eleven, has presented audiences with, what he claims is, his final film. On the surface, Side Effects is an investigation in to American society’s obsession with prescription drugs, specifically anti-depressants. Even the trailer makes it seem this way. However, as the film runs we see that there are several storylines at play here, including issues such as mental health, Wall Street greed and corporate crime. The thriller kicks off with a chilling scene of an empty New York apartment with blood on the floor. The screen reads ‘3 months…
