The films we’re itching to see in 2018

As we recalled last week, 2017 was an absolutely belter for cinema. And while the year that gave us a new Star Wars film, Paddington 2, Baby Driver, Logan, Get Out and Dunkirk will always hold a place in our hearts, we’ve already desperate to get to the cinema in 2018.

Next year promises to be a great one for film, with lots of mega movies schedules for release. Whether you’re after superheroes, coming of age tales or animated, there’s a little bit of something for everyone. Here’s a taster of what we’re looking forward to most.

Lady Bird

Release: 16 February

It’s already the most positively reviewed film of all time according to Rotten Tomatoes – if that doesn’t make you want to see Greta Gerwig’s directorial debut, we don’t know what will. Starring Brooklyn star Saoirse Ronan as the titular character, Lady Bird is the tale of an early-00s 17-year-old trying to find her way in the world. It’s been out in the States for a while, and everyone is raving about it. Keep an eye out for rising stars Beanie Feldstein (sister of Jonah Hill) and Timothée Chalamet too.

Avengers: Infinity War

Release: May 2018

All your favourite superheroes in one place – what more can you ask for? The Avengers – basically all the Marvel heroes – have go a world to save. As you do. Bad guy Thanos is heading to earth collect the mystical Infinity Stones, which will make him all-powerful and let him bend reality as his will. So the Avengers – who are currently scattered across various galaxies and dimensions – are going to have to join forces to stop him. With Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, Black Widow, Thor, Doctor Strange, the Guardians of the Galaxy and just about everyone else on offer, this is going to be an action-packed adventure you CAN’T miss out on.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

Release: June 2018

It turns out that those dinosaur-reviving scientist types have learned absolutely nothing from their previous adventures, because guess what? They’re heading back to the island to rescue the dinosaurs they left behind last time around! A volcano is set to erupt, and they can’t possibly let the bitey reptiles die out again. So Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard are off on a rescue mission. What could possibly go wrong?

Ocean’s 8

Release: June 2018

If you ever watched the Ocean’s movies and thought to yourself, ‘I wish there were more ladies here,’ then you are in luck, my friend. The Ocean’s franchise is back, but this time, it’s a gang of seriously bad-ass female criminals who are on a mission. Ocean’s 8 features eight of Hollywood’s biggest actresses (Sandra Bullock, Anne Hathaway, Sarah Paulston, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling, Cate Blanchett, Awkwafina and Rihanna) attempt a heist at the Met Gala.

The Incredibles 2

Release: July 2018

Our favourite crime-fighting animated family are back, almost 14 years after the original (we feel old). Elastigirl is out fighting crime while her husband, Mr Incredible, stays at home with the kids – and discovers baby Jack-Jack’s incredible powers. Of course, it’s not all domestic bliss – they’ve got some bad guys to contend with. Frozone is back, along with new guy The Underminer. We. Can’t. Wait.

Mary Poppins Returns

© 2017 Disney Enterprises, Inc. All Rights Reserved..

Release: December 2018

Everyone’s favourite cinematic nanny is back after decades away from the silver screen. Emily Blunt is taking on the role of Mary, and she’s revisiting the Banks family 25 years after the original, following the death of Michael’s wife. Practically perfect in every way as ever, she’s out to help bring life back to the family after the tragedy – and she and Michael’s three children are off on a memorable adventure. We’re gutted this one isn’t out until Christmas. Get it together, Disney.
