Surviving a Zombie Apocalypse

The third season of the hit US drama, The Walking Dead, is now underway with more drama, more blood and even more zombies! The show stars Andrew Lincoln as Sheriff Rick Grimes, who must lead a group of survivors, including his wife and young son as they  try to survive in zombie-infested America.

Rick has been leading the survivors for almost a year since the outbreak, and it’s been far from an easy journey. So whats the secret to survival? Here’s the Walking Dead guide to surviving a zombie apocalypse…

(Warning: may contain spoilers)

1. Work together
‘Strength in numbers’ has never been more true! It’s much easier to become trapped or overrun if you’re by yourself. The best thing you can do to survive a zombie apocalypse is to find a group of other survivors that you can trust. Your chances of survival will increase if you can pull your resources together. Chances of survival increase even more if you’re with someone who can’t run as fast as you…

On a daring mission for vital medical supplies, Shane (Jon Bernthal) betrays Otis (Pruitt Taylor Vince), deliberately shooting him in the leg after they are overrun by zombies. With the herd feasting on Otis, Shane is able to make a successful getaway and returns to the group as a hero.

2. Don’t get separated from the group
Don’t be a hero – the best plan is to always stick together. When you’re in a tight spot it’s important to have someone watching your back. Separation from the group could make you more vulnerable to zombie attacks. If you must go off by yourself, always let the group know where you will be.

Unfortunately Sophia (Madison Lintz) doesn’t take this advice, and becomes separated from the group after an attack on the highway. Scared, the young girl runs off by herself and isn’t seen again by the other survivors… Not alive anyway…

3. Find a base
It’s important to find a base of operations for survival. If you can find a safe building like a farm house or prison then you can fortify it to keep your group safe from the legions of zombies after your brains. From here it is advisable to always keep a lookout. Be careful about who you let in, as outsider groups of survivors might try to take your shelter for themselves.

Having found a home for their group on a farm, survivors Rick, Glenn and Hershel (Scott Wilson) take to the local bar for a drink. They soon encounter two other survivors, who begin to show an eerie interest the farm. A fight ensues, and Rick kills the two men in order to protect the safety of the farm where his family have taken shelter. Unfortunately the sound of gunfire attracts the unwanted attention of the walkers to their location. Watch Rick’s quick reactions here…

4. Always keep the motor running
In the likelihood that your fortified base becomes overrun by flesh eating zombies, it’s vital to have a backup getaway plan, so, preparing a getaway vehicle big enough for your group will definitely help. Just remember to fill it up first…

When Hershel’s farm is suddenly attacked by a massive zombie herd, Rick and the others have to act quickly to escape the ensuing threat. With everyone running and fighting for their lives things quickly get out of control and some members of the group are left behind.

5. Cover yourself in zombie meat to avoid detection
Zombies can smell life, so one of the best survival techniques is to cut open your deceased friends and use their juicy bits to disguise your scent. This way you can move freely through the swarm to reach valuable weapons and supplies. Just make sure to check the weather beforehand, as rain will no doubt scupper your plans. Rick and Glenn found this out the hard way when trying to reach a van in order to escape from the city.

6. Finally, choose your lookout spots carefully…
Survivor Dale (Jeffrey DeMunn) takes watch as the group scavenge for supplies on the highway. Unfortunately for Dale, he fails to notice a huge herd of walkers heading right for them. Location aside, think carefully about the person doing the looking out too.

So when a zombie army arrives on your doorstep, you’ll know exactly what to do. Just don’t come looking for us if you get transformed…
