We’ve all said it before; I’m going to eat more healthily, stop biting my nails and study more. But do any of us actually stick to our new year’s resolutions? When you set yourself a resolution make sure it’s firstly doable, and secondly, realistic. To give you a bit of inspiration, we wondered what the characters of How I Met Your Mother would pick to be their New Year’s resolutions and if they would be able to achieve them…
TED – Find true love
Throughout the series of HIMYM, Ted has always been looking for love. This hopeless romantic has had a lot of heartbreak but he has never given up his search for the one – and, as the whole point of the show proves, he does manage it! After he finally lets go of his feelings for friend Robin, Barney proposes to her and they get married in an episode flash forward. And, it is at this wedding that Ted will eventually find the love of his life. Ted just doesn’t know it yet!

ROBIN – Travel the world
As a news reporter, Robin has ambitions to travel the world and report the news from different corners of the earth. On a trip to Argentina, Robin finds herself a very beautiful man, played by the gorgeous Enrique Iglesias, so I think you’d agree that travelling was a choice well made. However, Ted get’s a little jealous when she brings Enrique back to America, but not for long! Watch the clip below to find out why.
BARNEY – Challenge yourself
Barney Stinson has always been a man of many talents. From performing magic to his incredible taste in suits, Barney is far from your one trick pony. So, to keep him at the top of his game, Barney likes to challenge himself to the more obscure tasks he or any of his friends can come up with.
LILY – Follow your dreams
Lily met her future husband, Marshall, at college where she was studying art. After a whirlwind romance, the pair graduated and moved to the city with Ted. Soon these two love birds are engaged and there whole life is set out in front of them. Unfortunately Lily felt she has left her art behind and when an opportunity arises in San Francisco, Lily leaves Marshall and New York behind to go fulfill her dreams, scared that if she doesn’t go, she’ll resent Marshall for the rest of her life. Lily later returns to a heartbroken Marshall however they pair patch things up and soon they’re married with a mini Marshall. Lily followed her dream to become an artist and still was able to have her happily ever after. You go girl! Watch the short clip below to see how happy these two really are.
MARSHALL – Work hard in college
We’ve all promised ourselves we would work harder in school and study more for our exams but sometimes we lose track of our educational goals. One guy that stuck to his guns is Marshall who studied night and day so he could become a lawyer, and he succeeded! I think we can all take a leaf out of his book, and prove that if we really put our minds to something, we can achieve it.
