Top figures from the nation’s media are searching for the journalists of tomorrow with the launch this week of the Scottish Student Journalism Awards (SSJA).
An impressive panel including the Daily Record columnist Joan McAlpine MSP will judge submissions from journalism students at universities and colleges across Scotland.
Other judges will include Jim Wilson, editor of the Sunday Mail; Matt Roper, the digital news editor at STV; and Jackie Bird, the BBC Scotland news presenter.
The winners will be announced at a glittering awards ceremony on Thursday 29 May in ARTA, Glasgow. The host of this year’s ceremony will be Stephen Jardine who has previously worked for STV, GMTV and Radio Tay and now runs his own PR company, Taste Communications.
There are 11 categories across print, broadcast and online, including a new category, Broadcast Story of the Year. The full line-up is:

- Student Publication of the Year
- Multimedia Publication of the Year
- Scoop of the Year
- Broadcast story of the Year
- News Story of the Year
- Sport Story of the Year
- Arts and Entertainment Story of the Year
- Feature of the Year
- Column of the Year
- The Calum Macdonald Memorial Award*
There are a variety of prizes for the winning students including media work placements and cash prizes.

The awards are open to all journalism students studying at higher and further education in Scotland. The deadline for submissions is Friday 11 April before 5pm. All submissions should be sent to ssjaapplications2014@gmail.com
* The Calum Macdonald Memorial Award category, launched by the SSJA in 2013, is named after The Herald reporter who died of cancer aged 32 in October 2008. Submissions to this category are nominated by a journalism course tutor.
