First of all, what does a buyer do?

Work with my designer, merchandiser and suppliers to brief. Develop, create and sign off a range of products, and deliver them into stores.

How did you get into this line of work?

I completed a BA Hons degree in fashion and textiles, then went on to a PgCert in buying, merchandising and supply chain.

Why did you want to work in fashion?

I loved being creative, and the business side of the job – which is what attracted me to buying.

What does your job involve day-to-day?

Working closely with my suppliers, designer, merchandising teams to deliver a range – analysing sales, booking new styles, managing the critical path, negotiating prices- no two days are the same!

Does it involve much travel?

It depends but with the grow in technology we are able to communicate with our suppliers all over the worked through email and video conference, but in the past I have however travelled to India and to Turkey.

What do you enjoy about your job?

The fact that every day is different, the opportunity to work so closely with the product, having an input and being able to influence decisions.

What’s the toughest part?

It is hard work, and you need to be able to manage ambiguity and keep calm in stressful situations.

What’s the biggest misconception about working in fashion?

That its glamorous!

What skills and qualities are important for buyers?

You HAVE to be super organised, calm, creative and be able to problem solve. Being able to work in a team and work together to achieve a common goal.

What’s your advice for others hoping to work in fashion?

Get as much work experience as possible! Learn as much as you can and be prepared to do the less exciting tasks – we all have to muck in to get the job done.
