Captain Marvel hits the big screen to celebrate International Women’s Day

In case you missed it, the latest instalment of the Marvel comics films, Captain Marvel, hit cinemas this weekend, on International Women’s Day (8 March).

11 films and 20 years later, Marvel has released it’s first film with a female lead.

CAPTAIN MARVEL

Brie Larson stars as Carol Danvers, (AKA Captain Marvel) as she tries to remember and discover who she is, while also trying to save the planet.

The film is being praised for its representation of strong female characters, something the film industry has been criticised for lacking over the years.

Not only does the film feature a strong female lead character, but also demonstrates the importance of female friendships and having good relationships with other women.

This film passes the Bechdel test, thank you very much.

SUCCESS

Captain Marvel had a successful first weekend, taking in $455 million: the second largest opening weekend of any superhero film (behind Avengers: Infinity War) and the sixth best worldwide opening weekend in history.

Brie Larson wanted to see some of the action for herself, up close and personal with fans, and headed to a cinema in New Jersey to watch the film, hand out snacks to cinema-goers, and take selfies.

So grab your your mum, your sister, your girl gang, or even a boy pal, and head to the cinema this weekend to feel seriously inspired.
