Everything you need to know about the latest Instagram updates 📸

If you have updated your Instagram app lately, you’re probably thinking the same as us: what’s going on?

There’s been too many Instagram updates to keep up with in the last few months, so we’ve broken down all the changes and new features you need to know about.

Follow 4 follow

If you swipe down on your Snapchat camera you’ll find your very own SnapCode so your friends can add you using their camera. Instagram has joined the code club and now lets you set a personal Name Tag.

You can make your background a colour, emoji or fill it with a #selfie. Click the ‘Scan a Name Tag’ button or press and hold in the stories camera to add a friend.

Sliding into your DMs

Name Tags aren’t the only new change to Insta, there’s a handful of new DM features. We’re well versed in the ‘ask question’ sticker in stories by now, but did you know you can send polls in a direct message?

Get your BFF’s opinion on your new haircut, nail colour or whether you should treat yo self to that new bag (you should) all through polls. Simply use them as you would in stories.

If using a poll isn’t enough, just start a group video call.

#NoFilter

This is the biggest and definitely most important update. You will now be able to see how much time you spend on Instagram everyday. Yes, every single minute you spend scrolling will be noted, talk about having the fear!

This might sound like a nightmare page that you vow to never check, but the decision to show usage came after time was spent consulting with mental health experts.

With social media contributing to body image issues, cybercrime and eating disorders, Instagram is introducing this new page in an attempt to help their users maintain healthy usage habits.

Facebook will also introduce the page that allows users to mute either the app for a selected amount of time, or set a reminder to log off after a set time period.

The information will be available in the settings tab of both apps, listed under ‘Your Activity’ on Instagram and ‘Your Time on Facebook’ on Facebook. While no date has been set for the feature, it is detailed in the latest update info. We’ll be sitting by our phones waiting for the shame to hit when we see how long we spend on the app everyday!

If social media is having a negative effect on you or a friend’s mental health there is help available.
