It’s the spookiest weekend of the year – Halloween is HERE! If you’re not heading out in your fancy dress best this weekend, how about settling down with Netflix to check out their creepy finest? Here’s our pick of the best frightening films and terrifying TV shows.
The Trollhunter
Forget the Blair Witch – this Halloween the only documentary-style film you want to see this Halloween is The Trollhunter, the best thing to come out of Norway since paperclips (that’s really where they come from). Three student filmmakers hear about some bear tracks and a poacher on the loose. On their journey to track down the bear they find out that there is something much bigger out there. They encounter a man who slays trolls for the Norwegian government who takes them on a thrilling and terrifying journey to track down the destructive giants. The film won an Amanda award for Best Visual Effects, Public Choice, Best Actor and Best Screenplay. It also won an Outsranding Achievement in Filmaking at Newport Beach film festival.
Donnie Darko
If psychological thrillers are more your thing, Donnie Darko is for you. A disenchanted, schizophrenic teenager (Donnie Darko) survives a freak accident by sleepwalking when a plane engine falls into his room. His survival prompts him to question what it means to be alive and he begins to be plagued by visions of a demonic six foot rabbit named Frank, who tell him the world is going to end. His ‘friend’ causes to him to commit various crimes as he explores the physical and metaphysical laws of existence.
The Addams Family
A Halloween classic. Based on cartoons by Charles Addams, the film follows creepy characters Gomez and Morticia and their children Wednesday, Pubert and Pugsley who receive an imposter in their home claiming to be Gomez’s missing brother. Morticia suspects something fishy is going on but the fraudster manages to evict the family from their home while chasing their fortune! During the adventure you’ll meet other spooky characters including cousin Itt who is completely covered in hair, Lurch the Frankenstein-esque butler and Thing, a hand with a mind of its own.
American Horror Story (Season 1-4)
Four seasons of the scarily popular TV series are available on Netflix including Murder House, Asylum, Coven and Freak Show. Coven is the story of groups of Salem witches possessing incredible supernatural powers such as clairvoyance, voodoo and telekinesis. They are brought together at Miss Robichaux’s Academy in New Orleans to expand and hone their powers. The series follows their complex personal stories of drug abuse and child stardom mixed with a chilling skill for deadly murders. A new supreme witch must be chosen so the race is on to be the best.
The Scary Movie (1 and 2)
If you’re keen for some more light hearted Halloween viewing, the Scary Movie films do a fantastic job of taking the mick out of scenes from classic horror films including Scream, The Sixth Sense, Hannibal, What Lies Beneath and more. The hilarious parodies are sure to make your night more silly than spooky, so you can worry less about jumping out your seat and more about peeing your pants.
