INTERVIEW: Spreading joy with My Dad Wrote a Porno

The smash hit podcast My Dad Wrote a Porno is back with its fifth book, following the escapades of the enigma, Belinda, and her colleagues at Steele’s Pots and Pans.

We caught up with Jamie Morton, son of creator, Rocky Flintstone, to chat their live tour and what to expect from the latest book.

At a time when it can seem like everything is all doom and gloom, My Dad Wrote a Porno is here to bring a bit of joy and laughter into the lives of listeners all around the world. The podcast now has a dedicated fanbase, following Belinda’s every (questionable) move, religiously waiting to see what she’ll do next.

What was your initial reaction when you first read the book and realised what it was?

I honestly couldn’t believe it when I first read Belinda Blinked. I had convinced myself dad was writing some sort of James Bond rip off or Robinson Crusoe epic. It took a little time to adjust to!

The podcast is going on tour next year – are you excited?

I’m genuinely so excited about going back on the road in 2020. Not many people are lucky enough to do a world tour and this will be our second, so we’re really being spoiled. Having already done one and knowing how much fun it was travelling with James and Alice, is making me even more excited. And it’s a brand-new show so I can’t wait to see people’s reactions to it!

How does your dad feel about the podcast? Is he a regular listener?

Dad is probably the biggest fan of My Dad Wrote A Porno in the world. He binge listens constantly – it’s so great to have his blessing as we’d never make the show if he was in any way uncomfortable with it. Luckily, he’s impervious to offence had has a great sense of humour so it’s all good.

Who would be your dream guest to have on the podcast?

There are so many people I’d love to have as a guest on the show. Top of my list at the moment would probably be Adele. I could imagine her loving it – plus she’s got a right dirty laugh!

Will Rocky Flintstone ever reveal his identity?

We’ve always been really respectful of dad’s desire to keep himself anonymous. He wrote under a nom de plume, after all – and the listeners have been the same. At the end of the day, it was James, Alice and I who made the podcast, dad just wrote the books for something to pass the time.

Who is your favourite character?

Honestly there are so many favourite characters I can’t pick just one. Although saying that, there is a brand-new character in book five who I am fully obsessed with, so look out for them.

What advice would you give to any Blinkers who have dreams of creating their own podcast?

I think the most important thing when creating a podcast – or anything, to be honest – is to really nail down your creativity and have a real reason for the show to exist. In other words, find an angle that’s unique.

And also take it seriously. We spent months prepping and planning before launch so we knew exactly the tone we wanted to create, had our theme tune composed, branding created and social channels ready. The market is so saturated that you really need to be ready straight out of the gates.  First impressions are crucial so try and make it sound as professional as possible.

The My Dad Wrote a Porno live tour will head to Glasgow on 16 October 2020. Get your tickets here
