Pancake Day has to be in the top 10 days of the year (ranking only after our other favourite sweet-treat laden holidays of Christmas and Easter). It’s the perfect excuse to stuff your face with pancakes and experiment with toppings – what’ll it be this year? Nutella? Seasonal berries? Bananas?
Whatever your choice, perfecting your pancake recipe is a must. Whether you’re after something traditional or healthy, we’ve rounded up some of the best recipes on the web.
The traditional pancake
If you’re a pancake novice, keep things simple with this basic pancake recipe from BBC Good Food – and fill it up with whatever you fancy.
The Scottish one
As with most things, us Scots have our own take on the humble pancake in the form of the drop scone. TV cook Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstal has a fab recipe for a wholemeal version right here.
The American version
Our friends across the pond do breakfast well – and often on a supersize scale. Jamie Oliver knows this all to well – which is why he came up with this American-style pancake recipe. Producing soft, fluffy monster pancakes, the recipe is super simple and you can top them off with whatever tickles your fancy, sweet or savoury.
The indulgent one
If your Pancake Day is going to be followed but 40 days and 40 nights of deprivation in the form of Lent, why not go overboard with a super indulgent pancake recipe? BBC Good Food have this delightful recipe for chocolate-filled pancakes with caramelised bananas – ridiculously calorific but oh so good.
The crepe
If you’re feeling continental, switch up your pancakes for a crepe. These skinny pancakes, recipe by Nigella Lawson, are great with sugar and lemon juice or smothered with Nutella. Mmmm.
The healthy one
These vegan, dairy-free, sugar-free, gluten-free pancakes from the brilliant Deliciously Ella sound like they’ve had all the fun cut out, but they’re actually mega tasty – and pretty simple too. You may have to hit your local health food shop for some of the weirder ingredients though.
