Puppetry, ethical hacking and surf science – Britain’s weirdest degrees

university_studies

At this time of the year, many of you will be thinking about what the future holds for you – and uni or college might be part of the plan. Fed up with the usual English, business and psychology degrees that you’re forever hearing about? We’ve rustled around the dusty corners of the world wide web to unearth some of the more unusual university courses you could apply for across Blighty…

BA Puppetry, Design and Performance

cssd.ac.uk

This three-year course at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, at the University of London continues to be one of the world’s few centres for training puppeteers. The programme teaches students to develop skills in design, visual performance, animation and collaborative theatre-making. So, if you literally enjoy pulling the strings in life, this might be the course for you!

BSc Ethical Hacking

abertay.ac.uk

Ethical hacking? Say what?! Before you contact the police to prevent nosey university students poking around in your personal files, this four-year course at Dundee’s Abertay University enables students to identify security vulnerabilities and develop countermeasures. The business world is actually employing hackers to find security holes in their systems before criminals do. Smart, eh?

The Robin Hood Studies Pathway

www.nottingham.ac.uk

As part of the MA History course at the University of Nottingham, students can select this module to ‘learn about the tales and ballads of one of England’s most enduring medieval heroes’. This section of the course is in place for students to develop an understanding of later medieval society in which the stories of Robin Hood became popular. Any excuse writing about men in tights in your dissertation.

MA Viking and Anglo-Saxon Studies

www.nottingham.ac.uk

Get kitted out in your chain mail and sharpen your axe, this odd academic course at the University of Nottingham (yes, them again) focuses on the languages, scripts and texts of the Medieval period in England and Scandinavia. The programme is ideal for those planning a career in the heritage industry. Or those who like to plunder villages.

FdSc Surf Science and Technology

www.cornwall.ac.uk

Surf’s up! Grab your board and Hawaiian shorts and head to Cornwall College. Sadly you won’t be riding waves every day as this two year course explores a variety of areas including marine conservation, surf culture and history, business and law, and the politics of sport. But, best of all, classrooms are on the beach in the heart of Newquay. Incredible!
