On December 26 2004, an earthquake struck the Indian Ocean and caused a catastrophic tsunami that changed the lives of millions. The Impossible tells the true story of a family caught amidst the thousands who were left wounded, lost and alone while on holiday in Thailand.
Tissues at the ready people, this is one of the most emotional movies I’ve ever watched. The Impossible takes you on a courageous journey led by a great cast and based on a true story. Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts play the parents who are separated from each other and their children as they play by the pool when the tsunami hits them by surprise. The film doesn’t hold back either, and there are a few shocking scenes of blood and gore that I was not expecting. However this only adds to the devastating brutality the tsunami had and really makes the audience think about what if would have been like to be caught in that horrendous disaster.
The acting by the three children in this movie is also amazing. Tom Holland who plays the eldest, Lucas, is fantastic and really commands the screen like a pro which is difficult for a 16-year-old to do against the likes of Watts and McGregor.
There isn’t anything I didn’t like about this movie. It was brutally honest, the special effects were incredible and the acting was amazing. As it is a true story, it’s also difficult to say how you would change it. Having said that, because family from the real story were Spanish, it might have been more true to the tale if the family in the film weren’t portrayed as a British family. However, that aside, this is simply a great film to sit down and watch and be awed by the infinite courage that this one family had to survive one of the worlds most terrible disasters.
Be warned: this film will probably reduce you to tears, so have a stash of hankies in your handbag at the ready!
