REVIEW: Union J – Union J

Union-jLast year’s  X Factor presented us with four bright, dazzling stars – otherwise known as Union J. The boys found fame during the boot camp stage of the show, where Jaymi, Josh and JJ performed as a trio, and George as a soloist.  But it wasn’t long until the judges decided to put them together, and Union J was born.

The group excelled throughout the competition, until being knocked back at the semi finals. But it was far from the end for these boys. Now they’re back, with their self-titled debut album.

Union J is a quirky, upbeat album that will leave you singing along after just one listen. The album is jam-packed with up-tempo beats and uplifting lyrics, proving that you don’t have to win The X Factor to make great music.

My favourite track from the album has to be the boys’ latest single, “Beautiful Life”.  A cheery feel radiates throughout the whole track and is bound to leave you feeling bright on any rainy day.   Another stand-out track is the boys’ first single “Carry You”, which soared to chart success back in June. This is another uplifting song, with a catchy chorus and plenty of those high notes!

Other catchy tunes from the album include “Beethoven” and “Head in the Clouds”. “Save the Last Dance” is another one to listen out for. With just one listen, I was hooked! With its heavy beat and addictive chorus, this song has a real disco feel to it. It will definitely make you want to get up and dance!

And whilst the album is mainly up-tempo, there are songs that show off the group’s’ softer side. “Amaze me” is one of them. This is a beautiful ballad that all of you hopeless romantics out there will adore. Since this is one of the rare slow songs on the album, it is one of my personal favourites. The album draws to a close with the group’s rendition of Demi Lovato’s “Skyscraper”, which would have been the boys’ first single if they had won the show. What I like about this song is that it shows off each member’s individual voice perfectly. Oozing with emotion, the track will definitely leave you with goose bumps.

So all of you Union J fans out there who are anticipating this album, don’t worry – it won’t disappoint! My only criticism is that it isn’t long enough! With just ten tracks, it’s clear that these boys have a lot more potential to show. But at the end of the day, quality beats quantity every time. I predict big things for these boys, and I’m already eagerly awaiting their next album.
