Takeaway v. Home Cooking

pizzaOne of the great things about moving away from home and going off to university or college is getting more independent and being in charge of your own money. However, it does suddenly mean that you’re allowed to buy whatever you want, whenever you want. This gets problematic when you’re in the flat on your own surrounded by amazing finds from Urban Outfitters with nothing for dinner. As you stare at your empty kitchen cupboards in your student flat, takeaway becomes more and more tempting… However, phoning in your tea cane be really expensive. We donned the chef’s hat and decided to compare the prices of a Dominos cheese and tomato pizza with one that you can make at home.

Dominos offer four different sizes and these prices are for pizzas with regular crusts and bases:

Personal (4 slices): £3.99
Small (6 slices): £7.99
Medium (8 slices): £9.99
Large (10 slices): £11.49

A pretty pricy way to feed yourself, even if you’re sharing with your flatmate. Making it yourself, however, saves tonnes of money – and it’s better for you. Our recipe for pizza came from the BBC’s Good Food website. We got prices for ingredients from Asda for our pizzas, and picked from their own brand ranges where we could:

125g cherry tomatoes – 50p
200g passata – 26p
125g mozzarella – 68p
1 garlic clove – 5p
Handful of fresh basil – 30p
290g pizza base mix – 70p

You can add any toppings you want to this, but a homemade plain margherita only costs £2.49 to make. The pizza is nice and crispy, and a healthier option to Dominos. If you’re conscious about eating healthily then serve it with some rocket on the top and some coleslaw on the side – but if you’re treating yourself then get some garlic bread. Bon appetit!
