TOP 5: Autumn 2014 trends

Now that the weather’s getting colder, it’s time to ditch those shorts and shades and update our autumn wardrobes. But don’t let the new season bring you down. There are lots of reasons to be excited for autumn – most notably the new fashion trends! With these top tips from fashion fan Mikhaila Friel, you can wrap up in style this year…

 

Printed Trousers

So your shorts and skirts (and skorts) have been put firmly aside– but don’t be sad. It’s too chilly to show off your legs, but that doesn’t mean they can’t look good covered up. Printed trousers are all the rage this year – from floral to monochrome, jazz up those legs in style! My personal favourites are these ones from New Look (10% student discount, anyone?) but you can bag yourself some great alternatives from River Island, Topshop, and H&M.

 

Tartan

Maybe the referendum got us all patriotic, or perhaps it was the Commonwealth Games that shone a light on this awesome Scottish trend! Either way, tartan is all in this year. There’s a huge range to choose from – scarfs, shirts, trousers, ponchos, skirts, shoes, backpacks – and available in most high street stores. Check out this beauty of a poncho from ASOS – you get discount with UNiDAYS  too!

 

Cardigans

It’s too cold for t-shirts, but too warm for jumpers – so what’s in-between? Cardigans, of course. But not the knitted-by-your-gran type – no, no, I would never do that to you. I love the range at Forever 21 (they’re on sale!) for a stylish take on the cosy favourite; but of course you can find cardigans anywhere.

Ankle Boots

It’s not welly weather just yet; but I draw the line at walking about in my dolly shoes. The rain is a menace, but we can always fight it off in style. I used to be a cowboy boots kind of girl, but lately I’ve been converted to ankle boots. And why, you ask? Well, you can wear them with anything. I recently bought myself a pair of black laced ankle boots from New Look, and I wear them with every outfit. No joke. From jeans, skirts, to party dresses, they blend in and make for a nice finishing touch to any ensemble.

 

Satchel Bags

Autumn means one thing – back to school/uni/college. But gone are the days when satchels were considered uncool – now it’s definitely geek chic. You can grab yours from most big brand clothing stores, like Urban Outfitters or River Island. And this may surprise you – but my preference isn’t from a clothing store at all! It’s from Paperchase, the world’s most loved stationery shop – from the hugely popular Cambridge Satchel Company, this green beauty is a must-have. Word of warning though – they don’t come cheap!
