She’s young, talented and beautiful. To the outside world it looks like Selena Gomez has the perfect life.
So fans were shocked yesterday to hear that Selena, 24, is seeking treatment for panic attacks, anxiety and depression.
The former Disney star revealed that she was taking time off to deal with mental health issues, a common side effect of her lupus diagnosis.
In a statement to People magazine the singer said: “I’ve discovered that anxiety, panic attacks and depression can be side effects of Lupus, which can present their own challenges.”
She added: “I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off.”

But what exactly is Lupus disease?
According to the NHS, lupus is a complex and poorly understood condition that affects many different parts of the body.
Its symptoms range from mild to life-threatening and manifest in the form of a fever, a “butterfly” shaped rash on the face, hair loss, fatigue and painful joints.

There are some types that just affect skin, but more severe forms of the condition can see skin, joints and internal organs all being affected.
Only 5 in 10,000 people in the UK suffer from the disease with around 90% of cases occurring in women.
If you are suffering from the condition, or any mental health problems, try and speak to your doctor or look for help and support at BBC Advice.

Last year Selena had to deny that she was seeking treatment for substance abuse after it was revealed that she had been staying at the Dawn at the Meadows rehab facility.
She later told fans the reason behind her stay was to recover from the chemotherapy she received to help treat her lupus.
And now it seems that once again Selena is struggling to deal with the condition but there has been no official confirmation about how much time Selena will be taking off. Currently she is in the middle of her Revival world tour and is due to come to the UK in October.
There has been no official notification that the remaining dates have been cancelled.
