The summer break is finally here, but that doesn’t mean the work has to completely stop.
This holiday is the perfect time to research the leading companies in your chosen field of work and reach out for some experience.
There are plenty of good reasons to get work experience, and we’re bringing you just a few.
EXPERIENCE
It’s in the title – work experience does what it says on the tin. It’s a great way to learn more about the different industries you’re interested in and figure out what you want to do when you finish your studies.
You might absolutely love your time working with a company, which can help narrow your job search when you come to apply for grad jobs.
On the flip side, maybe you gain experience and you don’t enjoy it, and can’t see yourself working in the industry after graduation – that’s fine!
By seeking out work experience, you’ve figured out earlier than most what you do and don’t want to do in the future, saving you valuable time when it comes to applying for positions later on.
HEAD-START
Applying for work experience gives you a head-start against other graduates. If an employer has two identical CVs and one has industry experience already, guess who’s getting the job?
Your part-time work, club memberships and studies are also hugely important, but candidates with work experience demonstrate their drive and knowledge of the industry, while also showing their work-ethic and drive to get ahead
CONNECTIONS
When you get work experience with a company, you show that you’re actively searching for opportunities.
By reaching out to them, you’re telling them that they’re a reputable company that you’d like to work for.
Very often, this will make a lasting impression on employers and you might be the first person they think of when a graduate or entry-level position becomes available. You never know – you could be gaining experience with your future employer.

At Source, we’re veterans of work experience, so we have a few tips for you before you start your search:
- Make a list of dream employers and see if they offer work experience. It’s all about getting your foot in the door and you never know where a week of work experience could lead you…
- Ask questions. The biggest mistake you can make is thinking you’re bothering someone or asking silly questions. Remember, everyone working at the company started off where you are now and they wouldn’t be offering work experience positions if they didn’t want to help you. So ask that ‘stupid’ question – chances are they’ve heard it a million times before anyway.
- Be prepared. Don’t show up on the first day without a pen or notepad, or suitable clothes. Make sure to be chatty and friendly and remember your manners, too. The better an impression you make the more likely you are to stick in their mind for any future opportunities.
- Make the most of it! It’s a great opportunity to learn – even if all you learn is you never want to work in an office ever again. You never know: you might find your future career.
