Saturday January 21st, saw 2.9 million people – yes men and women – take to the streets to join the peaceful protest across the globe in support of women’s rights.
Think hosting the march the day after Trump was inaugurated was a coincidence? Think again. The global marches aimed to unite people against Donald Trump’s presidency, highlighting issues under threat from the new US administration and draw support for all minorities – from LGBT members to people with disabilities. Though individual reasons for marching were varied – follow the #whyimarch hashtag to see more stories – one thing is for certain, these marches proved that love always trumps hate.
In the UK, the number is reported to be around 100,000, with events held in London, Edinburgh, Belfast, Cardiff, Lancaster, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester and Bristol. Think that’s impressive? Even women in Antartica were marching! Among the marchers were some of the most famous women in the world – getting down and dirty in the crowds with the rest of us. Scarlett Johanson, Alicia Keys and Madonna all gave epic speeches on the day and stars like Blake Lively and Ariana Grande took to the crowds with their own homemade posters.
