Ed Sheeran Wrote the X Factor 2016 Winner’s Song and His Fans Are Not Happy

After weeks and weeks of blood, sweat and tears, Sunday night marked the end of the X Factor Season 13. Matt Terry was finally crowed winner – with Saara Aalto coming in second and the boys from 5 After Midnight in third place.

The night also saw Matt Terry perform his winner’s single for the first time – a track called When Christmas Comes Around.

The song seemed to be warmly received – with celebs and fans chatting on Twitter about how much they liked the catchy tune. But hang on, don’t those plucky acoustic guitars and soaring vocals all sound a bit familiar? Well that’s because its written by none other than Ed Sheeran! Turns out he co-wrote the song with songwriter Amy Wadge (who also helped him pen the Grammy award winning hit (Thinking Out Loud). Amy tweeted that they wrote the song together in November before sending it on to X-Factor boss Simon Cowell.

And Simon must have liked what he heard as the track was picked to become Matt Terry’s debut single. But not everyone is happy. Hundreds of Sheeran fans took to Twitter to share their outrage that Ed hadn’t kept the song for himself.

It’s been over a year since Ed first announced that he’d be taking a break from music. Last December, Ed shared an Instagram post with fans telling them he would be stepping out the limelight and “taking a break from my phone, emails and social media for a while”. Naturally fans have been eagerly awaiting Ed return – but it looks like we’ll have to wait a little longer before our favourite ginge picks up his guitar to perform again.

But in the meantime we have X-Factor winner Matt Terry. So what do you think – do we have an new Ed on our hands? Let us know on Twitter!
