How to… Stay healthy this summer

girl-on-bikeSo you’ve finally finished your exams, and summer’s right around the corner. The sun’s out (ish), and you have no reasons to stay indoors. So why are you finding yourself glued to Netflix and sleeping until noon?! That’s not what summer’s about! If you want to avoid the dreaded lazy-itis, here’s how to stay healthy this summer…

Embrace the Outdoors

If you’ve been a bookworm like me all year and have forgotten what the outside world looks like, now’s your chance to remember! Even something simple like a stroll along the park is better than sitting inside. Call your friends and organise a beach day – all that swimming in the sea is a great work out, if you can handle the Scottish temperatures! Keeping healthy means being active, and summer is the best time to do it! Inviting your friends over for a water fight sure trumps a date with your laptop…

Healthy Diet

Now all that exercise means nothing if you don’t eat properly. Looking after your body not only requires the right exercise, but the right food too! You might feel tempted to treat yourself – you did survive your exams, after all – but just be careful. It’s okay to have a treat once in a while, but if you eat unhealthy regularly, it’s no longer a treat – it’s a lifestyle choice.  Why not try a fruit salad instead of a bag of Skittles? Summer is a time for light foods, such as smoothies, cereals, salads, yoghurt, and sandwiches. Equally, don’t feel the need to eat less – starving yourself helps no-one. In fact, if you don’t eat enough food, you won’t have enough energy to do exercise in the first place! Everything in moderation…

Stay Sporty

One of the best ways to stay healthy is through sports. There’s no need to drastically change your way of life to get fit; some regular exercise should do the trick.  Your local leisure centre should have a wide variety of sports to try over summer, such as swimming, tennis and badminton. And if you’re on a budget, then no worries! A morning jog costs nothing, and is sure to keep you healthy. If you’re short for cash, try cycling, hill-walking, double-dutch and running. Even dancing is considered a sport these days, and there’s definitely no cost required there. Get your music blaring and bust a move – it’s as simple as that! Whatever your situation, there’s no excuse for not doing exercise. Before you know it, you’ll be healthier than you could ever imagine…
