Formed in Motherwell by a group of school friends, indie-rock outfit Little White Truth are the first band to feature in Source’s new ‘Introducing’ slot, identifying up-and-coming acts to keep an eye on – after all, everyone wants to be able to say, ‘Oh I already know them…’
Made up of Marc Costello (lead vocals), James Bennett (lead guitar), Dylan Reilly (rhythm guitar), Konner Millar Brookbanks (bass) and Christopher Bradshaw (drums), the fivesome are starting to become regulars on the Glasgow gig circuit. Forming to take part in a school battle of the bands, the guys released their debut EP Something New earlier in the summer and now have their sights firmly set on bigger, brighter things.
Source grabbed ten minutes with bassist Konner to talk about his hopes and dreams for the band.
How did you guys get together?
We first got together about three years ago. It first started off as a battle of the bands thing through school, and it kind of grew from there. The band started off with us just pulling together, then some people left, some people joined and we ended up with this lineup, which has just kind of stuck. We’ve started playing bigger things since then.
Did you always want to play in a band?
Yeah, always. Ever since I was young, it was the kind of thing we all wanted to do. We all grew up listening to the same kind of music.
What kind of bands were you listening to growing up?
Bands like The Kooks, the Fratellis, Arctic Monkeys – they were a big inspiration. We all listen to a wide range of music, but that kind of stuff was the driving force.
How would you describe your sound?
Kind of alternative rock. It’s upbeat, happy stuff usually – like Two Door Cinema Club, that kind of stuff.
What acts inspire you?
There’s loads of great bands around just now that we’re inspired by. Peace are a great band. We’re really into them, that kind of sound. Two Door Cinema Club, Vampire Weekend, Circa Waves are great.
Your debut EP came out earlier in the summer, which you’ve released yourselves. How do you go about doing that?
We decided it was a good idea to get a professional recording of our music, just to let people here it obviously. It’s hard to let people outside your close area hear without releasing something. So we went to LoFi studios in Glasgow, and stumped up the money ourselves to record. We spent two days there recording and after we got all the tracks through, we did the artwork with our friend Andrew. We did everything ourselves basically, and put it all together. We paid to have it put on through Emu Bands, that’s how you get it onto Spotify and things like that. We put the money out there ourselves and hopefully it’ll pay off!
What did it feel like making your own EP?
It was brilliant. There’s nothing better than playing your own music, writing your own songs and seeing it all come together.
Are you working towards an album now?
We’re working on a lot of new stuff just now, and we’re taking a wee break from gigging to write some more of our own stuff. So we’ll see what comes of that.
You’ve played quite a few gigs over the last couple of years – which has been your best?
We’ve played a lot of gigs in Glasgow. We’ve played in the Record Factory a few times, it’s always been really good. We’ll take a lot of people with us! We actually played a charity night recently at the Hilton in Glasgow, which was actually really fun.
What venue would you love to play?
There’s so many good ones. The O2 Academy in Glasgow is brilliant though. I’d really like to play in there. That’s the dream, going forward. Then there’s the Hydro and stuff! But that’s obviously much bigger. We’ll settle for the O2 Academy for now!
You performed on the Riverside Show on STV Glasgow back in March – what was that like?
It was brilliant! We’d never done anything like it. Live TV is very strict and regimented, in terms of how long songs can be on and stuff. We were nervous, but it was good. It was a really good experience. We got a lot of good response.
What are your hopes for the future of the band?
Expand the audience, and keep going. We’re trying to expand beyond Motherwell, into Glasgow, and play bigger and better gigs.
Why should Source readers check out Little White Truth?
