REVIEW: That Awkward Moment

That_Awkward_MomentWith every Disney star and their auntie trying to prove that they’ve moved out of the shadow of Mickey Mouse (we’re looking at you, Miley), it only made sense that Troy from High School Musical would be the next to step up and show the world that he is now Actual Adult. Enter That Awkward Moment.

That Awkward Moment is the story of three New York based besties – Jason (Zac Efron), Daniel (Miles Teller) and Mikey (Michael B Jordan) – who make a pact to be relationship-free following the breakdown of poor Mikey’s marriage. What could possibly go wrong?

Jason’s main hobby is acquiring women to add to his ‘roster’ for commitment-free encounters, while Daniel uses friend Chelsea (Mackenzie Davis) as his wingwoman on his mission to hook up with every woman in New York. Mikey stands by looking miserable and eating ice cream – standard breakup behaviour.

The three amigos are in the prime, at the top of their game and then… The beautiful Ellie (Imogen Poots) appears in Jason’s life, Daniel’s attention is turned to someone he’d never seen in that way before and Mikey finds happiness once more – and none of them will admit that they’ve broken the pact, all in denial about the newly updated relationship statuses.

So will they get their happily ever after? Can the friendship survive? Will they ever admit that they’re adults and it’s OK to settle down? Will any of them ever be able to commit? You can probably guess the answer to all of these questions.

That Awkward Moment a movie which can’t quite decide if it wants to be a rom-com or a screwball, lad-tastic comedy. All the laugh out loud moments appear in the trailers, with a big focus on toilet humour. The premise is all right, but the main characters are massively difficult to like, or even believe in – which makes the female characters’ interest in these three men pretty confusing. Sure, they’re easy on the eye, but they’re all fairly appalling human beings. Even you, Zac Efron, and your incredible face.
