Source Loves… The Hunger Games

HungerGames_Katniss_PeetaThe Hunger Games wowed the world back in 2008 when the first book was released. Set in a post-apocalyptic world where teenagers are forced to fight each other to the death, it wasn’t long until this gripping story found fame across the globe.

Fast forward five years, and not only has there been two more books added to the series, but there has also been a major block-buster movie adaption! Last year, audiences were treated to the film version of The Hunger Games – and weren’t disappointed. Now with the sequel movie Catching Fire rapidly approaching, we thought we’d break down what Source Loves about The Hunger Games…

The Heroine

Move over, Harry Potter! Throughout the trilogy, our feisty heroine Katniss Everdeen displays some serious girl power – and not in the tacky Spice Girls way. Main character Katniss could definitely teach Bella Swan a thing or two about being tough. If most girls I know were entered into The Games, they definitely wouldn’t survive. But Katniss did. With an arrow in one hand and bow in the other, nothing was stopping this girl! Hats off to you, Katniss, for proving that girls really do run the world.

The Catchphrases

“May the odds be ever in your favour.” A quote that will be long remembered even after the trilogy ends. And that’s not the only catchphrase that has warped the world into Hunger Games mania! Ever referred to your bestie as “the girl on fire”? Or when someone says “let the Games begin”, you don’t realise that they were actually talking about the Olympics. These catchphrases helped make the trilogy famous, and will never be forgotten.

The Action

With the thrilling storyline and the dramatic fight scenes, the first movie is bound to have you sitting on the edge of your seat! The Hunger Games shows twenty-four tributes fighting to the death, and so it really captures what we are willing to do in the name of survival. And sure enough, this involves a lot of violence. If you’re looking for a good action movie, then what are you waiting for? The Hunger Games is full of suspense, drama, and lots of nail-biting moments!

The Cast

Sometimes, when you go to see a movie adaption of a book, it will be a disappointment. But not this time. And this was hugely to do with the cast. I applaud the casting director, who chose actors that perfectly portrayed our favourite characters. There’s down-to-earth Jennifer Lawrence, who plays Katniss – not only is Jennifer the nicest person in showbiz, but she’s also got an Oscar under her belt. She’s clearly talented. Then there’s Liam Hemsworth (Gale) and Josh Hutcherson (Peeta), who, let’s face it, won our hearts the moment they stepped on screen. With their good looks and acting skills combined, it’s obvious why these boys were chosen to play the male leads.

The Quality

Whether you read the book or watch the film, you’ll be aware of one striking similarity between the two: the excellent quality! Author Suzanne Collins’ writing makes me both envious and awe-struck by her ability to make the fictional world of Panem come to life. It’s no wonder that the book became the Number One New York Times Bestseller! And then there’s equal praise for the movie. Directed by Gary Ross, the movie certainly captures the book’s best moments, and even added some extra scenes that weren’t originally in the book. What more could we ask for?
