Forget the January blues – after discovering that this month offers some super fun celebrations of things which are completely and utterly bizarre, we’re feeling better already! So ignore the cold weather, take a break from studying and get these five dates in your diaries…
Peculiar People Day – 10 January
If you’ve got a friend whose brain isn’t wired up quite as neatly as everyone else’s, a strange next-door neighbour or batty teacher – today is the day to honour them. Take some time to ponder their uniqueness and appreciate their individuality.
International Sceptics’ Day – 13 January
If you’re forever noting how wrong everything is with the world – today is the day for you. Chum up with fellow sceptics and consider the ‘truth’ behind historical dates like the Holocaust and Watergate. There’s bound to be something someone’s missed.
Squirrel Appreciation Day – 21 January
Forget memes of cats flooding Buzzfeed and Twitter. On the 21st social media feeds are going to be filled with super-cute, super-lovely, super-awesome squirrels. Did you know that squirrels can run at a speed of 20 miles an hour, or that their teeth never stop growing and they gnaw on hard objects like tree bark? They’re so wonderful it’s no wonder there’s a day set aside to appreciate them.
Chocolate Cake Day – 27 January
A day that pays homage to chocolate? There’s no need for an explanation here. Simply spend your day baking lots of lovely chocolate cake and reward yourself for all your hard work by eating the whole thing – preferably in one sitting.
National Inane Answering Message Day – 30 January
Inane? No, that wasn’t a typo. 30 January is in fact National Inane Answering Message Day. Inane means silly or absurd, so it’s pretty similar to insane, but it’s not. Anyhow, you know all those friends who leave really long, annoying voicemails on your phone, with lots of useless information – such as the day and time they’re calling, even though the answering machine lady tells you exactly that before the message plays? Well, it’s payback time. Call away readers, call away.
